What it’s like training to become a surveyor

Luke Roberts took part in our graduate training scheme and is now employed as a Senior Risk Management Surveyor with us. We chatted with him to find out about his journey and experiences on the programme.

What are the benefits to taking part in the graduate scheme?

The experience you gain. You get the chance to learn both in the classroom and through on-site exercises, which is the best of both worlds.

Why were you interested in this career?

I was working as a tradesman and decided that my long-term future was not necessarily “on the tools”. I invested in myself and undertook a BSc in Building Surveying part-time. This career allowed me to combine my years’ experience of site work with my newly advanced building technology knowledge.

What is a typical day like for you in your role?

I’m desk-based in the morning checking and responding to emails until around 9:00 or 9:30. Then I’m out visiting sites until around 2:00 or 3:00. I return to the office to catch up with the day’s admin such as plan checking and product research.

Why would you recommend this route to others?

The graduate route allows you to fully understand all aspects of the role and the UK housebuilding/construction industry, giving you a great platform.

What would give people the edge over competition for getting into this career?

People who are not just going through the motions to get a graduate placement, but who have a hunger and desire to succeed and not just for the end result to be handed to them.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

The responsibility, being involved in multiple projects, getting to know the different site teams, having to be aware of new building practices and materials and/or inherent issues with materials. Problem solving!
